Help me Save a life!?
I rescued a Rotti/Pit mix from a known dog fighting ring when he was four months old. Tolei (Toe Lee) Is an amazing dog, He’s out going and loves other dogs and kids.. But. He is terribly afraid of strangers.. He gets along fine with me and my fiancee and most of my friends.. But he Is terrified of Bigger men and Women.. He barks and hides behind me. By bigger i mean ppl bigger than me. I’m about 5 foot so that’s about everyone. Can anyone give me some tips on how to encourage him that not everyone is bad? He is beyond my knowledge of Dog Training. We’ve tried having the stranger give him treats but he takes it and runs. Or barks. He’s not aggressive but I’m worried. Some people tell me just to put him down, But he’s such a happy puppy! And a sweet heart, He almost died the first two months i had him so he didn’t get to meet to many people.. Can anyone help?
When the stranger comes in, get them to ignore the dog, rather than rush over and start spoiling it with affection.
As dogs are naturally curious, they usually come out to investigate. Get the stranger to kneel down and let the dog approach it. Also tell them not to touch, talk or look at the dog. The dog will usually come out and sniff the newcomer, let him do this, then when he finishes, he will let them know whether or not he wants to be patted.
If he simply turns and walks away, leave him. He’s obviously not interested. But if he wags his tail or shows some sign of wanting affection, now is the time.
It’s also important for everyone to be calm and relaxed, because when your anxious or excited, it just makes things worse. Also NEVER give affection when your dog is anxious, because this encourages the behaviour. It shows the dog that there really is something to be afraid of. I know its hard not to comfort him but believe me it really DOES make it worse.
Getting your dog to accept strangers will take time! So remember be patient!!
I used a very similar method to get my dog to stop being scared of lightning and thunder and it worked great!
